About Mecca Sports Co Broadcasting

Mecca Sports Co Broadcasting was envisioned by  ’78 Blue Devil and two-sport standout David Pettit, with the support from his wife Lisa.  Dave has a passion for Quincy Basketball and covering the four high school teams at Quincy High and QND.   Pettit’s  vision states that in its name;  ‘Quincy is the ‘Mecca’ of high school hoops’

Dave was fortunate to play basketball for two QHS Blue Devils coaching legends;  Sherrill Hanks & Jerry Leggett.  Dave would go on to play baseball at Quincy College under another Quincy great, Jim Finigan.

After graduating from Quincy College, Mr. Pettit started in the business world.  He would eventually build his own mortgage company and raise three daughters with Lisa.

Then, David would move to his life’s passion;  Coaching Basketball.  Coach Pettit started as a high school assistant at Bryon HS, then became head coach at Durand High School.   He would spend a year as an assistant for the Rockford Jefferson girls team, before taking the reigns at Marengo High School for three years.  He would step up to the junior college ranks as the Head Coach at McHenry Junior College for four years.  Coach Pettit has been a student of the game and has followed many of those lessons from Hanks & Leggett.

After leaving the coaching fraternity, Dave got the opportunity to fill in as color commentator for WTAD GameNight.  Coach started analyzing road games in the Quad Cities for Western Big 6 games.  Pettit moved into the main color man spot for the last three seasons, lending his knowledge & breakdown of game situations for Devils & Raiders games.

Joining the Mecca Sports Broadcast Team will be play-by-play man Jeff Wellman.  Jeff has been the voice of WTAD GameNight for the past 7 years.  Wellman worked two seasons covering the QND Raiders exclusively with Coach Jim Bearden.  The duo would work the first two years of GameNight covering the Raiders & Blue Devils.   Wellman and Pettit have teamed up the last three seasons.

Wellman was a three-sport athlete at QND.  He played football at Culver-Stockton.  Coach Wellman started his coaching career with football at his alma mater C-SC.  In 1986, Jeff was part of the Quincy College staff that brought back football.  Coach Wellman got the opportunity to jump to basketball as the Head Coach of the Quincy College Lady Hawks.  He would end his college career as Rod Walton’s assistant for the 1989-90 C-SC Wildcats.  It was Coach Walton’s last year too.

The next year, Jeff Dorsey hired Wellman to do color commentary for WTAD.  Jeff got the chance to work with some of the best in local radio and moved into the play-by-play slot covering the Wildcats and the new team, the John Wood Trailblazers.  Bob Gough was along for the ride and co-host of Sportsrap with Wellman.  After leaving radio, Wellman was the PA announcer for the Trailblazers for 9 years.  Mike Moyers called Jeff back to WTAD in 2015 with Ticket930 and a return to ‘calling hoops’.
